'This year I marked Earth Day (22nd March) by accepting an invitation to appear on Trinidad's TV breakfast show - CNC3's The Morning Brew. Presenter Hema Ramkissoon was interested to hear how the Covid-19 lockdown might be impacting local wildlife, as well as what we can learn about our relationship with the planet as a result of the current circumstances - and ultimately how we can live more sustainably post-lockdown. A recording of our conversation is available here. Let's hope we can all take the opportunity to live differently even after lockdown, for the benefit of wildlife, the climate and our own wellbeing!

I am excited to be part of a motivated, passionate and knowledgeable team of scientists spearheading Trinidad and Tobago's celebrations of the International Year of the Reef! This initiative brings together a number of partner organisations, including SpeSeas, Trinidad and Tobago Field Naturalists' Club, The University of the West Indies, University of Trinidad and Tobago, Buccoo Reef Trust, The Institute for Marine Affairs and the Environmental Management Authority, We have a range of events planned for the year, with the dual aims of: a) raising awareness of coral reefs among the public b) increasing protection of T&T's reefs through working with governmental stakeholders and policy makers. Find out more here and here. So far we have hosted an extremely well-attended Launch Event, and a fully-booked screening of the documentary Chasing Coral followed by an audience Q&A.
Those in T&T, look out for more events as the year continues! This post originally appeared on my research group's website.
On Sunday 21st September, 166 countries around the world held ‘People’s Climate’ Marches to coincide with the international climate summit in New York City. I am based in Trinidad and Tobago, where I study patterns of biodiversity – including the effect that humans can have on this biodiversity. As one of the greatest threats facing biodiversity is climate change, it is an issue I feel passionately about. So, I was delighted to hear that T&T would also be hosting their very own People’s Climate March on the same day as the events in NYC, London and all over the world. |
